The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
