The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being declared a risk of fleeing
The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of his move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
