Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls from the official, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
